MISSION STATEMENT
Isaiah 58 is a Christian assistance ministry inspired by God’s
word in Isaiah 58:7-8 (Is it not to share your food with the
hungry and when you see the naked, to clothe him and not to turn
away? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your
healing will quickly appear, then your righteousness will go
before you and be glory of the Lord will go before you and the
glory of the Lord will be your rear guard).
We distribute food, clothing, emergency prescription help,
and in cooperation with West Texas Opportunities, Salvation
Army, and Northside Community Center emergency one time rent and
utilities help when we have sufficient funds. We provide these
services to people without regard to race or religious faith.
Need is only the requirement and determinant for the services.
In 1998, several individuals from First Christian Church
Disciples of Christ, and other Church members from First
Presbyterian, and St. Mary Episcopal, and First United
Methodist Church, and Living Water. Here in Big Spring had a
vision to extend the ministry of Christ by providing emergency
food and clothing to the homeless, to low income seniors, the
unemployed and needy families. After much prayer and paperwork,
Texas chartered and the IRS granted 501©3 status to ISAIAH 58.
The doors opened in March 1998. In 2001 we became part of the
United Way family. In 2007 a grant was received from the Dora
Roberts Foundation which enabled us to serve three times the
number of clients. All of us at ISAIAH 58 are volunteers
thus no salary expenses. In 2008, our 33 volunteers have served
more than 5,500 hours.
This is an ecumenical effort. St. Mary’s Episcopal; St. Paul’s
Lutheran, First United Methodist, Birdwell Methodist, Temple and
Berea Baptist, First Presbyterian, Nazarene and First Christian
Church have all provide volunteers and/or financial support.
In 2009, we distributed more than 300,000 pounds of food to 5509
families. Much clothing was given including children’s and
adult’s winter coats and blanks. Utilities assistance of
$43.024.00, Rent assistance of $7,180.00 and other assistance of
$5,000.00 was provided last year thru Isaiah 58.
We are in constant need on funds, volunteers, food, clothing and
above all PRAYER.
